The owners of House H loved where they lived, but not how their house fitted them. With their two children now young adults, they nearly purchased around the corner but decided instead to rework what they had. Altering only the interior of the house, new space, light and ease of movement was created without extending. By removing all internal walls and creating divisions of space using only fixed and loose furniture, new flexible spaces could be achieved simply by making what was there work harder.
Existing under-utilised rooms received modifications to provide improved uses and amenity. Combined with step-free doorways, openings and wet areas, these modifications future-proof the house, enabling the owners to age in place. House H is an exercise in how much organisational change can be achieved through small physical modifications.
